I’ll start with the AdWords program, as Google is one of the
largest and easiest-to-use search and content networks on the
Web. To sign up for AdWords, simply visit its home page at
adwords.google.com.
AdWords Home Page
The sign-up process is tied very tightly into the process for setting
up your first campaign and ad group, as you will see in a
moment. I will let you know when you are working on your first
campaign and when you are simply selecting account wide
settings.
Sign Up Now. The AdWords home page is frequently updated,
but it always prominently features a “Sign up now” button somewhere
on the page, in this case on the upper right-hand side. If
you already have a Google account, you can sign into AdWords
using your existing user name and password, but for this example
I will assume you are new to Google and walk you through
the process of signing up as well. Click on “Sign up now” to begin, and you will be taken immediately to the Choose Edition
page.
Choose Edition
Here you must select from one of two choices.
1. Starter Edition. The Starter Edition is for advertisers advertising
a single product or service. Google recommends it
for those who are new to Internet advertising, and you
can move up to the Standard Edition at any time.
2. Standard Edition. The Standard Edition offers Google’s full
range of AdWords features and functionality, and Google
recommends it for experienced Internet advertisers and
medium- or large-sized businesses.
As an affiliate advertiser, you will be starting a number of
campaigns for various different affiliate programs, so you should
select the Standard Edition before clicking Continue, which will
bring you to the Identify Customers page.
Identify Customers
The Identify Customers page is actually the start of setting up
your first campaign, so be aware as you fill it out that you will
want to choose the languages and locations that are appropriate
for the affiliate program you have decided to join. In this example,
I use eBay’s affiliate program for the United States.
Target Customers by Language. Here you will select the language
or languages your target customers speak.
Target Customers by Location. Here you will decide to target
your customers by country and territories, regions and cities, or
choose a customized area within a certain radius of a location you
choose.
For eBay’s affiliate program, I select “English” and “Countries
and territories.” Make the appropriate selections for your
own affiliate program, and click Continue to go to the second
Identify Customers page.
Target Customers by Country or Territory. Here you may select
one or more countries or territories and click onAdd to add them to
the “Selected Countries and/or Territories” box. When you are finished,
click Continue to go to the Create Ad page. |
