Do you have auto insurance? Some people do not realize that in most places driving without auto insurance is illegal. If you are in an accident, and are found to be at fault, you may have to pay damages out of your pocket. So, while you may think you cannot afford auto insurance; the truth is you cannot afford to be without it!

There are different kinds of auto insurance: liability and full coverage. Liability is the most important kind to have. This kind insures you if you are at fault in an accident. It will take care of the other driver's car damages and their medical expenses, if needed. Please note that liability will not cover your damages. However, liability auto insurance can help you avoid being taken to court over a fender bender.

Full coverage, or comprehensive auto insurance, is great to have, but is not legally required. It pays for your vehicle's damage and medical expenses. Most policies will also pay for your damages if an uninsured driver hits you. If you are still paying for your vehicle, your financial institution will likely require you to have full coverage as well as liability.

Most policies have extra perks added on to them. Many policies provide rental cars, which can come in handy while your vehicle is in the shop. They may provide roadside assistance, which offers peace of mind for many drivers. Some auto insurance companies will "replace" your pet if they are killed or injured in an auto accident. To find out what extra benefits a particular company offers, talk to an agent.

If cost is a concern for you, there are several options to help out. First of all, if you drive an older vehicle, consider getting just liability coverage. You may also choose a higher deductible. This means you will pay lower premiums, but you will have to pay more out of pocket if you file a claim. Cutting out some of the extra perks from your policy may lower your premiums as well.

Most companies allow you to make monthly payments throughout the life of your policy. If you renew your premiums once every six months, you may need to make a small down payment, and then pay a certain amount for the next five months. However, if you can pay in full, you may save money by doing so.

Your best bet for saving money on auto insurance is to keep a clean driving record. Speeding tickets, at-fault accidents, and other violations are sure to raise your rates. Certain sports cars are also more expensive to insure.

As you can see, auto insurance could save you money in the long run. And, it may not be as expensive as you think. Your rates are based on a number of factors, including gender, age, vehicles, and driving record. It is true that if you have a number of moving violations, your rates may be higher. However, if the violations happened several years ago, they may have "fallen off" your record by now, and should not affect your rates.

You will probably be able to secure discounts for special circumstances that apply to you and your family. Teenage drivers with good grades who have passed a drivers' education course are eligible for higher rates. Many companies offer a multiple vehicle discount. Also, if you pay your premiums in full when your policy renews, you may receive a large discount. Staying with the same company for a certain amount of time may yield a loyalty discount, too.

If you think you are too busy to apply for insurance, think again. Applying takes a very short amount of time, and can be done online. There are websites that allow you to input information about yourself, and they will give you free quotes from several companies. Shopping around will ensure that you get the lowest rate possible.

Once you apply for the insurance, the companies will check your motor vehicle record and confirm that you are insurable. They will make you an offer, and you will be able to purchase an auto insurance policy from them at that time. You will be continuously insured for a given period of time, usually six months. Near the end of that period, you will be given a renewal notice.

Once you purchase auto insurance, you will be glad you did. Even though the monthly expense can put a dent in the budget, the benefits far outweigh the money spent. Auto insurance is easy to obtain, and companies are willing to work with you!
